The Mysterious Rain of Cookies
Big Smiles, No Answers
Oh my, what a beautiful day!
The sun was out, and the snow sparkled with tiny prisms of rainbows. But this wouldn’t last long, as the crystals of ice surrendered to the warmth of the sun and began to melt.
And here is what came after.
They all lived happily ever after…
You aren’t falling for this, are you?
Well, fine, if you really insist on me actually telling the story…
And with you knowing who you are — and probably not who you aren’t — I suppose it must be an anecdote, and not merely some footnote about cookies with no remorse, of course.
But not just any cookies will do for you, nor for me, too.
For these cookies should be full of must — of the mysterious kind, and by no means deleterious.
Before I tell you so those things that you would know, perhaps it might be better if you got a cookie catcher.
Oh no, not that one! Better make it the other.
For these are no ordinary cookies, for don’t you know they are full of love, seasoned with grace and hope, and the ingredients are virtues and trues and bless yous.
Pawpaw welcomed most mornings, but one decided to be bad.
It came right at Pawpaw, and did its best, and barely missed hitting him, right in the chest!
So Pawpaw proclaimed, “Better luck next time, you morning!”
And he began praising the Lord and thanking Him for His Mercy.
And well, he could get overly-enthusiastic probably thanking the Lord for his nose, and toes, and elbows, and for even that ugly bug that just across the floor.
For you see all those were gifts from the Lord, and doesn’t he know it?
For life is great and a great blessing for sure.
And all these things point to breathing and breathing was a really nice thing to do in the mornings.
For each breath is a gift of grace from the Lord who loves us so.
So, he would use those precious breathings to say things for Jesus, even if it was just a gift of joy, or praise, or thanks, or a sigh of reminiscence.
For reminiscence was the very proof, the very evidence of God’s mercy, don’t you know?
Proof and memory that he had lived a life that was given to him personally by Jesus, that very Christ of God. He gave His Life for us all and to us all.
And Pawpaw would cry for His Love of Jesus.
Now, we all know very well that that the very tought of such things would little devils repel!
Even the big devils would stay away, for Pawpaw made Jesus King of his heart every day.
And this made even the biggest and the strongest devils’ knees quiver in fright — giving them no delight.
But Heaven’s Halos, Heaven’s overly cutesy all-girl troop, would come down as they would and because they could.
They would drop by to romp and play and to look in on him nearly every other day.
They'd toss him love with kisses
and lots of good wishes.
Saying blessings and a prayer,
Finding warm fuzzies to share.
Then, as was their way,
They'd flutter away.
Upon seeing such things, the Hot Stuffins, Heck’s all-girl gaggle of devilinas, would get tummy aches, proclaim their disgust with flair, and then get their little derrières out of there.
They would fly away with their tongues a-waggin’ and their tails a-draggin’.
But what of those little devils in his neighborhood? Most of them would stay away.
But no, not specifically the Lil’ Debils gang.
They would show up without a lick of common sense
And not even a bit of good judgment — so dense!
Everyday reasoning would escape from them,
For they would cause such mayhem.
And safe and sensible decisions would flee; For sound strategies? They couldn't agree!
Grumbles, the nefarious and precarious leader of the Lil’ Debils gang, stood blathering all over the place, minding everyone else’s business like he shouldn’t, when
BONK!
Something hit him, and right on the head.
Grumbles
BONK!
Thinking it might be rain, he held out his dirty hand.
Then something solid hit him on the head again.
And then another.
Angry, he reached out and caught the next one.
“Ah ha!”
It appeared to be a cookie.
He looked at it.
He sniffed at it.
And desperately wanted to get rid of it.
But it was—
BONK!
Sorry. That was another one.
It was one of Aunt Bee’s faithtastic cookies!
Of course, he’d never admit it, but like everyone else, he loved her cookies!
So, seeing no one around, he —
BONK!
Goodness, that’s distracting.
He ate it.
Well, those cookies were just lying on the ground, by his big toe. So the big oaf picked them up and wolfed them down quickly, hoping that no one would know.
But Gripes happened along and saw Grumbles wearing a grin suspicious and wrong.
Berattled, Gripes berated him.
“You know that smiles on our faces have no places!”
Grumbles was about to let out some awful outburst, but instead, it was only blessings and nothing cursed.
“Have patience, my child, so that you may know merciful joy and peace…”
Unable to stop talking, his speech he began balking.
Gripes gasped.
“If I had to guess, you got ahold of the forbidden cookies, now confess!”
He looked around and whispered nothing profound, “Give me some now and I won’t yell, nor will I tell!”
BONK!
A determined cookie hit him right on the head.
Both Gripes and Grumbles fought over the desirable when—
BONK!
There was another!
Both little devils mangled down those cookies in the wink of a blink!
When it was all said and done, those two little devils were smiling and grinning and hugging and forgiving and—oh my goodness—whatelse-ing.
They were as happy as little devils can be.
So happy, in fact, that their behavior caught the attention of—
Oh no.
The other Lil’ Debils!
Snub snobbed, “WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOWN TO?”
Sneek cried, “This is NOT the detestable, contemptible, abominable behavior we suspect from our hideous leaders!”
Snark shouted, “You’re ruining our disreputations!”
Scram stomped up to them.
“What’s going on here?”
And all the little devils screeched:
“SCRAM!”
So Scram turned around and stomped away.
Gripes smiled contagiously.
“There’s nothings going on, you sweet little devils…”
Now it was Gripes’ turn to cover his mouth!
Suddenly…
BONK! BONK! BONK!
Cookies began to rain down on them like a gentle April shower in the spring, hitting them incidentally conspicuously right on their wee little noggins. What can compare with such a beautiful sound?
Only for a moment did they pause, but then there was a fight for a cause!
They all fought over those cookies, but once they had eaten one, well, that’s all it took.
For their mean attitudes turned into benevolent platitudes.
You never saw such a happy lot as these little devils. They sang and hugged and danced most merrily, to spite their personal personalities contrarily.
Those faithtastic cookies were so full of love that—
BONK!
Just a moment.
Mmm… so delectable!
Now where were we?
Not sorry to say, someone called Heck’s Angels that day, and they hauled away those poor merry Lil’ Debils singing and dancing all the way.
Touché!
About this time, who would come waltzing into the general target area but the two little troubles, Snip and Snide. They just so happened to miss the precipitation and consequences of the genuinely faithtastic cookies.
Snip
Snide
Now Snip and Snide were sniffing but good, all around and up and down.
Snide: “What is that that I do smell?”
Snip: “You sure do!”
BONK!
Snide bonked Snip on the whereabouts of his noggin.
Snip: “I know that scent! It’s Aunt Bee’s cookies!”
Snide knew that hungry look in Snip’s eyes.
“Now Snip, calm down!”
CHOMP!
No snapping turtle could do better.
“OUCH! Snip! I'm your cousin, NOT a cookie!”
Now far above, the angels of hope and love were rolling with laughter and flirting with glee.
“Hey, we’re getting pretty good at this!” proclaimed Luna, the angel of hope. “Oh, look, there’s Snip and Snide I’ll get them but good!”
LUNA
Rosie, the little angel of love, shook her head with a cookie in her mouth.
ROSIE
“Nope. All outs.”
Luna apprised, “Aunt Bee, we’re all out of cookies…”
“We need some mores…” delineated Rosie.
Aunt Bee feigned, “What have you two been up to?”
Both little cherubs gave her a big smile, but no answers.
If only crumbs could talk.
Do you know what they’ve been up to?
Because I’m not telling.
